Hypno pixilation

The idea behind these photomontages is that I took Douglas Couplands love for pixels and combined them with the idea that the internet is feeding into reality.

This is quite a literally. What I was trying to say with this photomontage, tv brainwashing the youth. But doesn’t effect the adults. Went for more iconic tv screens on the kids cause you get a clear understanding of whats its about with the black and white spiral background. Its makes it obvious thats its about hypnotising the young.

The concept is the same, still touches on the hypnotic side of the internet but I wanted to showcase like the internet glitching into our world. If that make sense. Thats why there different colour blocks but there all pixelated. The

With this on I wanted to be more literally with my message. But this time, i wanted to use iconic game characters but in the context of my concept. Throughout the photomontages I use vintage images cause there such a contrast between the Black & White images to the solid colour blocks throughout the piece.

For the last three images are standstill and I remember talking to Jason & Becky about how I was going to make my work. Jason said something about how my previous photomontages were static and whether I would want to work on movement.

So just to experiment, I used an image of Bella Hadid and put the same elements as the last images but with a Kirby sticker. Added that cause it reminded me of those “sticker drugs” with different characters.

Similar to the last one, I just wanted to explore more on making GIF’s. This piece I would stay is recreation of some kind. To the work of Nam June Paik especially his “TV Garden” which was featured in the Tate Modern.

What I took inspiration from is that throughout the “garden” the tv’s were just playing multiple of images/ videos some where just the news whilst others were provocative. I lean more towards using “more out” imagery but layered on top of it is the Pacman starting screen.

Douglas Coupland

Douglas Coupland is an Candian novelist and artist. His visual work looks into themes like curiosity with the corrupting and seductive dimensions of pop culture and 20th century pop art. Douglas Coupland takes great inspiration from Andy Warhol’s work.

**Due to his fascination with technology, a lot of his work appear in a stylised pixelated look.**
**“I think that the way my brain is wired, words and objects are almost exactly equal,” Coupland once explained. “I sensorily detect little difference between the two.”**

Micro Manifestos:

“Slogans for the 21st Century” by Douglas Coupland. Douglas used Copenhagen as his personal exhibition when he decided to put up 500 posters overnight. The slogans aim to challenge and describe the thoughts and ideals governing contemporary societies. Coupland also chose slogans that relate to life online and offline. With these slogans he also comments on questioning the media platforms that create our behaviours and interactions, from Facebook to Tinder.

What am I going to take from him?

His visual choice with pixelating certain bits ion his art is an really interesting choice and I would love to incorporate that style choice into my work.

Also in terms of visual, the way that he colour block his piece is definitely something that i will be considering throughout my work.

In Real Life

Mazaccio & Drowilal

Mazaccio and Drowilal are a French duo that use images from the internet and defaces them using spray paint and tape. By using these mediums there work comments on how mass media is shaping dreams and identity.

The genre of work that they produce falls into the category of “Iconology”. Iconology looks at the study of visual imagery, symbolism, and interpretation.

Elise Mazaccio and Robert Drowilal have been working as a collaborative duo since 2009 when they began creating self-published photo-books.

“The idea was to make edits, or snapshots, by collaborating and denying the concept of image authorship,”

The images are drawn from Instagram, Tumblr and Pinterest.The duo work with a wide range of images, from advertising and stock imagery, to cartoons and internet memes.

“For us, the work of art is part of this huge tank of images that are shaping the imaginary. It’s all about deconstruction and parallels.”

What am I going to take from their work?

The concept that the comment in their work is interesting. I like how have two different mediums combined into one. The idea would be that I would produce photomontages that look at the internet vs reality with a brainwashing theme throughout. Hopefully. I want to blend my drawing skills with my photoshop skills this time around.

Working Process

The first image, was in “Becoming” its a double page spread of me discussing the chat about my project and me trying out pieces that I wanted to test out.

The second image is from “On Your Marks” for this page I had to play around with colour but still include the three main shapes that I was working with.

The third image is a showcase of different ideas for our performance which was in “On Your Marks”.

The first image is a double page spread for “Becoming” project where I looked at Tyler Spangler for inspiration.

The second image is a double page spread on two artists that I looked into for “Psychogeography”. The artists were Senthuran Varatharajah who was featured in Flaneur Magazine which i looked into on this page.

The third image, is a pages featured in “On Your Marks” about the artists Harold Hollingsworth and Zio Zelger who were both major influences in the textiles section of this project.

The final image features two artist that were used in different part of the “On Your Marks” project. I looked at Bridget Riley who was for more of the graphic look into this project whilst Cy Twombly was more of a use in the textile element of this project.

Personal Automatic Writing & Line Drawing

From using the comments from instagram, I wanted to be a little more personal with my text. I still wanted to go with the idea of using words and phrases to create an image. I reverted back to Psychogeography again but this time using a technique that was introduced in Becky & Jason’s section of the rotation. Which is Automatic Writing. The first time doing it was difficult but I thought that it was the most authentic way to get the words/phrases that I wanted to use in my work.

**In my writing, I tend to be a bit more negative about the experience not just about myself but compare that to the mostly positive comments that I got**.

Word Imagery

From the photomontage, I was kind of at a stand still. Like I couldn’t move on.I decided that I was going to take a previous brief from Psychogeography. Specifically, Shellie’s part of the project we I had to create an image using a word from the writing element of the project.

From that brief, I took the comments of people calling me “sweet” and making a visual presentation of that. Hence the lollipop. I wanted to continue the idea by using a comment “loud & confident” and creating and image of an air horn.

*Like the lollipop, I went for a “hit the nail on the head” approach. Where i could make a really simple image of the airhorn and coming out of it would be other comments that people made about me.*

Starting Points

From the initial ideas, I went on to doing photomontages that are responses to the comments left by people. This came from Tyler Spangler because besides looking at typography he also does collages and photomontages.

These two photomontages are response to people calling me confident. I wanted to contrast two things. Model be the epitome of confidence with the a dog that convey quite a fierce and scary but strong look.

Initial Ideas

Had a conversion with Anthony and Susanne about the direction of where this project was going. At this moment in time I had about two artist to show. Anthony gave a bunch of factors to focus on in my work based on the artists that I presented to them. Which were Luke Brickett & Tyler Spangler.

This piece was inspired by Spangler’s work. I wanted to incorporate the focus to be on the phrase.I did other colours just to see the variation of the piece. Used an effect that Tyler likes to feature in his work where the word or phrase becomes more distorted towards the end.

This piece was inspired by Luke Brickett. When having my talk with Anthony he said just to say some characteristics that I liked from his work. I said that his work resembles movie posters and I like that element to it. So I decided to take some of the comments made from instagram and implement them into this piece. I wanted to follow his colour scheme by using contrasting dark colour palette.
